Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing send out spiderbot programs to scan the Internet for information. Each of them uses different robot programs to "crawl" each site, and each of them prefers a different type of sitemap of a site.  Having a sitemap makes it easier to crawl, and since it takes time to be indexed and ranked it makes sense to make the crawling process easier for each of the major search engines.
