Business Plan Software: Do You Need It?

Business Plan Pro   Business plan software is something that often gets overlooked and isnt considered to be a necessity for some reason. In my opinion, business plan software is essential, it is not a luxury. I am a huge advocate of business planning. When people ask me if they need a business plan, my response is, 'Absolutely!' You see, starting a business without a business plan is akin to starting college without a degree plan.

Why Does A Home Based Business Require A Business Plan?

Many people ask the same question again and again. Why is it necessary for me to create a business plan for my small home based business? I guess the answer is, ( at the risk of sounding smug) you don't need any plan if you all want to do is remain a small home based business with a limited future. The next comment that I hear often is "I really don't like to write and I'm terrible with presentations." The answer to the latter is you won't need to create any presentations if you don't require start up funding.

A business plan doesn't always need to be a formal document that will be shared with anyone outside of you or your small organization. Even if you never share it with anyone, you still need a plan. The purpose of planning software is to provide you with a "schematic" for your business, how it will be funded what is your target market, how you plan to reach that market and where you plan to be in your specified timeframe. Unless you do this sort of thing for a living you'll need some help.

The following pages in this HBR Business Planning Guide will help you understand why it's necessary to have a plan and to direct you to the appropriate resources to aid you in developing that business plan. Good planning software will have hundreds of business plans built into it to cover all different types of businesses and business models.

Sometimes the hardest part of starting a new business, is just knowing where to start. That's when it's important to have some structure and professional advice. Not everyone can afford to pay a professional advisor to put together a business plan.
