Selecting an Internet Service Provider

This is just a quick review of some things you should consider in an Internet Service Provider, Cable Service, Telephone Service etc., or a web host (The actual place where your website resides on the Internet)

How to Select an ISP and Web Host

In today’s environment ISP’s are not in limited supply, however the biggest issue presented to the Home Business operator is what type of broadband should be used Cable or DSL. This section is not going to referee the ongoing debate or "broadband wars" currently raging. Depending on where you live will ultimately drive your decision on either ISP type. If you live in a major metropolitan area you may have access to both.

Most everyone today has access to some type of broadband whether it's cable, phone company or satellite. Your decision should be based on your budget. The only other consideration I would suggest that you look into is the upload speed. If you are managing your own site you want a relatively fast upload speed.

A few years ago my area didn't have broadband cable or DSL. The only option to get broadband was satellite. I did my research and found out that there was no upwards broadband and I would still have to use dial-up to upload to my host. I don't know how it is today but it's always worthwhile to ask the question.

Hosting Services

One of your biggest issues in developing your own website is your hosting service.  Depending on what you are going to do and what type of online business you intend to set up will drive your decision on selecting a web host.

For example if you are an Internet Marketer you will need the capability of generating multiple web-commerce enabled websites that may or may not require add-on or sub domains. You may also need multiple email addresses for each domain or service. The ability to create a blog for each domain, as well as provide some type of customer management tools to handle inquiries or support for your product. Additionally you may need the ability to run cgi scripts or create mysql databases for some of your software.

Your head may be spinning at this moment, and you may be saying, all I want is a simple and cost effective web host.  Well about 7 or eight years ago what I just described above could easily have cost $100 per month or even more.  Today however you can have all of it plus more for less that $10 per month, with enough disk space and bandwidth to run any videos or graphics that you may require.

The most important things to remember when choosing a web host is ease of use and functionality.  For example if you want to start an Internet business the easiest way is to become an affiliate marketer.  If you say that you don’t need a website to be an affiliate marketer, you are correct, however if you want to be a successful affiliate marketer you will most likely have a landing page for the product you are offering as a pre-sell for the product or to offer incentives for the product with your own bonuses.  This type of web page is called the sales page, in the Internet marketing world.  Each sales page requires a host for the files to reside on and if you are running multiple campaigns you will need to host each of the sites individually.

Domain Registration

If you want to have a www.yoursite.com site, you will need to first find out if your domain name selection is available and secondly register it immediately. Having your own domain name will lend distinction to your site and have the appearance of a more professional look to your viewing audience. Having your own specific website utilizing a proprietary name within the website address will help you get better listings within the search engines. I wrote an article about this called “Is Your Domain Name SEO Friendly,” which has been viewed thousands of times on the Internet discussing the importance of domain names as they relate to SEO and keywords.

Another reason to have your own domain name is that it will be easier for viewers to remember as well.  Domain registration services will tell you immediately if a domain name is available or not.

They will scan the web to determine if anyone is already using the name that you submitted.  If no one has, they will register your name and it will become your unique domain on the web.  The cost for registration today is nominal, you can get your own dotcom for less than $10 or even lower.  Our RandaTechosting service has packages that will include free Domain Registrationas well.

Plan on registering your domain name for a minimum of 2 years, because if you don’t someone else may have a backorder on your name and as soon as your registration lapses they will pick it up. Don't take any chances.

Tip:

Additionally, if your budget allows, try to register your domain in other extensions as well, such as .net,.org, .info,.biz etc. If you have been lucky enough to register the domain that you wanted, take the precaution of registering the additional name extensions.
